What is Risperdal?

Risperdal is known as an atypical antipsychotic drug. It is approved to treat schizophrenia in adults and adolescents, bipolar disorder in adults and children ages 10-to-17, and to reduce irritability in children (5-to-16 years of age) with autistic disorder. There are also some indications that Risperdal is being increasingly used to treat ADHD. While the drug was launched on the market in 1996, the use of Risperdal in children was not approved until 2006.

What are the major allegations in Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuits?

Among other things, Risperdal gynecomastia plaintiffs allege that Johnson & Johnson failed to provide adequate warnings regarding Risperdal breast growth to patients and doctors. The lawsuits further allege that the company improperly marketed Risperdal for use in children prior to the FDA’s approval of risperdone for pediatric use.

Have other antipsychotic drugs been linked to gynecomastia?

Invega is an atypical antipsychotic drug that contains paliperidone, an active metabolite of risperidone. Risperdone is the active ingredient in Risperdal. The Risperdal lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are also investigating Invega lawsuit claims on behalf of individuals who suffered gynecomastia that may have been caused by Invega.

Have any studies shown a link between Risperdal and gynecomastia?

Yes. Research on Risperdal male breast development that was published in 2006 in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology found that Risperdal in children may stimulate the production of prolactin. This hormone plays a key role in the development of breasts in girls, and milk production in nursing mothers. According to the study, the use of risperidone for children was linked to the development of gynecomastia in boys and the start of lactation in girls.

I recently heard that the government settled charges with Johnson & Johnson involving the promotion of Risperdal for children. What did that Risperdal settlement involve?

In November 2012, Johnson & Johnson agreed to settle charges brought by the U.S. Department of Justice involving the improper marketing of several of its drugs, including Risperdal and Invega. The Invega and Risperdal settlement portion of the agreement resolved charges that the drugs were improperly marketed to children, elderly dementia patients and people with mental disabilities.

How long do I have to file a Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuit?

That depends on the state where you live. Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuits, likely any civil claim, are subject to statutes of limitations that vary from state to state. A statute of limitations sets a firm deadline for when a lawsuit must be filed, and failing to file within this timeframe can eliminate any chance your have for recovery. For that reason, it’s extremely important that you contact a Risperdal lawyer at our Firm today to ensure your legal rights are not placed in jeopardy.

How long will it take to resolve my Risperdal lawsuit?

It generally takes about two years from filing for a case like a Risperdal lawsuit to come to trial, though this can vary greatly. While many such lawsuits do settle before trial, this usually only happens after both sides have had time to prepare their case.

Will I be suing my doctor if I pursue a Risperdal male breast growth lawsuit?

No. Risperdal male breast growth lawsuits target the manufacturer of the drug, not doctors. In fact the allegations in these claims include accusations that Johnson & Johnson failed to warn doctors about the potential for Risperdal gynecomastia.
